Znojmo

Before the mid-11th century, on the left bank of the river Dyje near a former Great Moravian fortified settlement was originated a princely castle. The Rotunda of St. Kateřina with precious Romanesque wall paintings praising the Przemyslids has preserved from the original complex. In the first half of the 13th century a town was originated here. From the Middle Ages come the two main dominants of the town – the Gothic tower of the Old Town Hall and the Gothic rectory Church of St. Nicholas. Among other sights excel the two-storey Chapel of St. Wenceslas dated from the early 16th century, the Baroque monasteries of the Dominicans and the Capuchins, the remains of the medieval fortifications or the extensive underground. Among modern architectural sights are worth mentioning the protestant church in the style of Viennese Art Nouveau, the Neo-Renaissance theatre or the modern fresco by painter Husák in the Church of St. John the Baptist. Znojmo is famous with wine-growing.  The traditional vintage festival in Znojmo became a special event of the whole region. Westwards from the town the National Park Podyjí is located.
