Rotštejn is a fascinating ruin of a rock castle originally dating back to the 13th century. The little that has remained of it over the centuries can be found not far from the town of Turnov. Despite this, it is worth visiting because although the castle ended as a ruin, people did not abandon it. From the very beginning of the 17th century, refugees from the towns settled here. Its weather-worn rocky crevasses were used as dwellings which they began to adapt to suit their lives. Gradually, cottages, stables and storage buildings were built in the rocks. Its last inhabitants were still living here in the middle of the 1920s.
