Location:
The ZOO is located in the city quarter Stromovka, the complex includes a mixed forest, meadows, and four large fishponds, which are used for breeding of water birds. Walks in the slightly wavy terrain are pleasant. In the ZOO complex there is a children’s playground, a contact ZOO, a restaurant and possibilities of small refreshment and buying souvenirs. Parking is in front of the entrance.

Specialization:
Rare and endangered fauna, Carpathian form of northern lynx. The ZOO has a significant merit in preservation of the genetic resources of northern lynx by re-introduction of 50 pieces of animals in seven countries of central and west Europe in 1970-1992. It also participates in re-introduction of barn owl and stock dove in the Czech Republic. It participates in 12 European breeding programs of the EEP.

289 mammals in 69 species, 525 birds in 130 species, 8 reptiles in 6 species.
The most significant species:
Bear species, northern lynx, snow and Singhalese catamount, Sumatra tiger, macaque, cercopithecoid, chimpanzee and other species. The number of the breeding species listed in the Red Book of endangered animals: 28, the number of the breeding species endangered in Czech nature: 20.
Recommended visit:
Pavilion of primates, pavilion of hippopotamuses, pavilion of big felidaes, free runs of bears, pavilion of giraffes and African cloven-hoofed animals, breeding aviaries of birds of prey.
Rarity:
The Ostrava ZOO, as the only ZOO in the Czech republic, breeds Canadian lynx (Lynx canadiensis). This interesting animal is adapted to the snowy environment it lives in. It has got big paws, which it uses as snowshoes and the pelage prevents it from sliding on ice. This lynx is one of the representatives of a large felidae collection, including all the species. The little deer – Vietnamese sika, is only unique in the Czech Republic. Only a few pieces of this animal have been living in open nature and zoological gardens obtained them as a present from the Vietnamese government. The Ostrava ZOO propagates them with success.
