Chateau Žďár nad Sázavou

In the beginning a group of Cistercian monks built a log cabin in the wild forest of the Sázava river in the 13th century and step by step with their bare hands they built their humble monastery.

Five centuries later, the magnifi cent Baroque reconstruction of the monastery ranked among the most expensive projects of those days. The triumph of the thirty year construction eff ort was celebrated in 1735, and only two years later the monastery burned down and Vejmluva himself died in a year. At the end of the century the monastery was abolished by the Emperor Joseph II and it was changed into an economic centre and a chateau.

Why visit

One of the most stunning ecclesiastical residences of the early 18th century was a project by the enlightened and art-loving Abbot Václav Vejmluva together with the architectural genius Jan Santini-Aichel. The monastery with its perfectly operating economy where the stables are just as magnifi cent as the prelacy halls; the mystical pilgrimage church of the St. John of Nepomuk at Zelená Hora (Green Hill), and the cemetery with the layout of a skull, are the gems of the original artistic style called Baroque Gothic.
