The royal seat was built in the 13th century as a support base for the ruling family of Přemyslids. Later on it also served as a state prison. For example Edward Kelly, the court alchemist of the Emperor Rudolf II, was imprisoned here for three years for the murder of the Emperor’s official in a prohibited duel.
Why visit?
Among the forest hills the high circular tower of the ancient castle with extensive fortification stands out white. Many Czech sovereigns favoured the castle because of its excellent setting in the middle of forests full of game. The castle halls experienced a lot of fun, feasts and drinking bouts, but also many serious political discussions and fateful diplomatic talks.
