Clean air means healthy living – and, thanks to its location 900 m above sea level, Benecko has plenty of clean air! Apart from the sweet-smelling air, the village also offers many days of sunshine and unique views of not only the Krkonoše, but also Ještěd Mountain, and even Trosky Castle, 100 km away in the Bohemian Paradise!
An open-air spa full of sunshine
Unlike other resorts in the Krkonoše Mountains, located in valleys, Benecko bathes in the warmth of the sun’s rays, being located at a higher altitude, in the upper reaches of Žalý Mountain. On clear days you’ll feel like you’re in a dream on the sunny hill slopes. Make the most of the original open-air spa, full of fresh air and with marvellous views of the crests of the Krkonoše Mountains, the highest of which is Kotel (1,434 m)!
A whole range of activities are available in the area, depending on whether you go there in summer or winter. Thanks to its location and annual snowfall, conditions for skiing are usually excellent. It’s no accident that successful Czech skier Šárka Záhrobská-Strachová comes from here. Záhrobská-Strachová specialises in giant slalom and, primarily, slalom, and she still returns to Benecko to this day.
Benecko: the ideal spot for winter sports
Skiing is a key part of the winter in Benecko, where you’ll find terrains suitable for all – hillsides for experienced downhill skiers, gentle pistes for beginners and the easy-going, children’s slopes for the smallest skiers and a snow park containing barriers, jumps and a heated relaxation zone. In several areas you can try out the popular action sport snowtubing. Another good tip are the sledge routes leading for more than a kilometre downhill from the lookout tower on Žalý peak (1,019 m) to the Golden Viewing-point (Zlatá vyhlídka) and Hotel Žalý.
Benecko is also a paradise for lovers of cross-country skiing. The tracks, connected to the nearby cross-country skiing complex at Mísečky, are one of the most beautiful and extensive sports complexes in the Krkonoše. Excellently prepared trails for both classic skiing and skating await visitors. Because Benecko is virtually on the crest of the Krkonoše, you needn’t immediately exhaust yourself with long ascents, and your cross-country excursions will take you straight to locations with the best views into the distance. As a bonus on top of this are good prices, high-quality services and the relaxed atmosphere of a peaceful winter resort.
Summer on the mountain-tops
Just like it is for cross-country skiing in the winter, in the summer Benecko is the ideal place for both hiking and cycling excursions along the ridges of the Krkonoše. The village is a stop on the routes of the so-called Krkonoše cyclobuses (special buses aimed at cyclists), letting you visit other places, say the nearby towns of Jilemnice or Vrchlabí. But that’s not all!
In case you’re worried about missing out on the wild journey along hillsides known as snowtubing, Benecko offers a summer version, where visitors travel along wooden tubes in specially adapted boats. Visitors also have the opportunity to travel in mountain carts. Another great opportunity are the excursions to the surrounding area, including the farm with Hucul ponies, also a good option for a trip with the kids: the farm also includes a pub in a wooden hut with a large children’s playground, with a herd of mountain goats on view all year round!
