The tourist season in the Czech Republic starts with historical parades, fine cuisine and amazing surprises!

Choose according to what appeals to you. Are you drawn to historical cities? Come join in the big city celebration with parades and original entertainment. Do you like Czech castles and chateaux? Why not be there after the winter when they first open their doors? We also have a surprise for you in the form of the start of the season at one very special military fortress and in a popular tourist recreation area. So where should you head first?

Most Czech castles and chateaux welcome their first visitors during Easter weekend. But Křivoklát Castle will be symbolically unlocked already a week before Easter and the tourist season in the Křivoklát district and in Rakovnicka will be traditionally opened at the same time. The celebration will also feature tasting of Křivoklát beer, mead, cider, coffees and other regional products.

At Easter time theatre lovers should head to the castle at Mnichovo Hradiště. The castle theatre can be visited on regular tours, but over the long weekend you can also go backstage and see period stage technology. If you can’t make it here over Easter, there will be special tours on April 18, 20 and 21.

Also happening over the Easter weekend, on Saturday March 30, is the opening ceremony of the tourist season at the Josefov fortress. The fortress with its vast system of underground walkways dating to the end of the 18th century was never actually used in any battle, but still cost Emperor Josef II 10.5 million gold pieces. Be there when the flag is raised on the bastion, while a festive procession makes its way through the fortress town, concluding with a ceremonial handover of the keys to the underground.  The crown jewel of the celebrations will be the re-enactment of period battles, the first time such an event will be held in Josefov.

If you like water, boats and summer, on Saturday 18 May come to see the start of the tourist season in Lipno. In addition to a fun supplementary programme with contests for children and adults, you can also look forward to an exciting dragon boat race in which everyone can participate. To take part you need to have a crew of twenty paddlers, a drummer and a helmsman, and in each boat there must be at least four female paddlers. Your team can consist of co-workers, a bunch of friends, a sports club, a big family or the residents of a single district – all can compete for the title of dragon boat king of Lipno!

On the weekend of 18 and 19 May  2013, the ceremonial ceremonial opening of the summer tourist season in Pisek called “Cipískoviště” will take place, featuring theatre, concerts and tours of museums and the historical power plant. In line with the town’s name, which in Czech means “sand”, the proceedings will also feature lots of... sand! The banks of the Otava River will be decorated with a gallery of sand statues big and small, to which you can add your own creation, if you wish. If you can’t make it here in May, don’t despair! The statues will remain on display along the Otava River throughout the summer, as long as they aren’t ruined by wind and rain.

Kutná Hora is a town that sees an influx of curious visitors all year round. Nevertheless, here too there is a magnificent opening of the summer tourist season. This year’s celebrations will take place on 22 and 23 June. It will take the form of an impressive Gothic celebration with historic tours, craft fairs, knight tournaments, music and dance. You can even tour the royal silver mining town of Kutná Hora in style in historical costumes, which is sure to make your amazing medieval experience even more enjoyable!
