In the 13th century in the marshy area near the river Lužnice arose a market settlement. On its place was later originated a tributary town, which reached its vigour in the 16th century during the reign of the last Rosenbergs. At that time the whole marshy area was gradually transformed and many lakes and fish ponds were built here. The town fortification, preserved together with five gates and a few bastions, was defended by so-called Golden gutter and the lake Svět in the south. The Renaissance chateau, connected by a long corridor with the Rosenberg’s library and the complex of Augustinian Monastery, is a significant architectural sight. At the monastery complex is the unique two-nave Church of St. Giles. The tower of the Early Baroque Town Hall is another dominant of the town. In the town centre has preserved a large complex of citizens´ houses of various architectural styles. These days Třeboň is popular with its spas, fish farming, and the beer of the Regent trade-mark. The area of Třeboň and its surrounding has been included as a biosphere reserve in the UNESCO list.
