The town was founded in the 13th century at the border of southern Bohemia and southern Moravia, in the countryside, which is due to its rough climate called Czech Canada. In the mid-15th and the 16th centuries, when a post station was established on the route Praha – Vienna, came the economic architectural vigour of the town. Slavonice is typical with its citizens´ houses with rich Renaissance gables, often decorated with figurative graffiti and equipped with entrance halls (the so-called “mázhaus”) with vaults. The Gothic Church of the Assumption of Our Lady and two gates create the silhouette of the town. The 19th century due to the transferring of the main routes meant the economic decline of the town. Thanks to this fact numerous outstanding sights from the Late Gothic period as well as Renaissance have preserved to these days. The important activity within the Czech-Austrian coexistence is the Cultural bridge “Fratres”, organized by the Kultubrücke Fratres and the Slavonice Renaissance Community, supporting cultural life in the region.
