The town of Pardubice was founded on the confluence of the rivers Labe and Chrudimka in the 14th century. The first Prague Archbishop Arnošt of Pardubice supported the town. Its time of vigour falls in the period of the reign of the Pernštejn family. They had the Gothic water-castle rebuilt into a luxurious Renaissance residence. In the chateau interiors have preserved unique Renaissance wall paintings and original painted panel ceilings. After the great fire in1538 the town with its oblong square and unified facades of the houses was rebuilt in the Renaissance style (nowadays most of the facades are adapted in the Baroque style with typical terracotta elements instead of stone ones). The best known is the house called “U Jonáše” (At Johan’s), decorated with plastic relieves of the whale swallowing the prophet Johan. The tower of the Green Gate and the Church of St. Bartholomew are the biggest dominants of the town. The town is famous with horse races “Velká pardubická” and with Pardubice pumpernickel.
