Crystal Trophies for the Tour de France Come from the Czech Republic

4. 8. 2014

The Crystal trophy for the winner of the world famous cycling race the Tour de France will be blown and polished by Czech glassmakers from the company Lasvit in Nový Bor this year, already for the fourth time.

The award was designed by Peter Olah under the leadership of Jozef Kabaň, chief designer of Škoda Auto, which is a longtime sponsor of the race.

The crystal awards will again be given to the holders of all four jerseys - the overall winner with the yellow jersey, the best rider under 25 with the white jersey, the best sprinter with the green jersey and the best climber with the polka dot jersey.

The cup is blown into wooden molds made of lead crystal. The basic properties of lead crystal, namely high refraction and gloss, are thereby fully taken advantage of. The cup is then decorated with engraving.

The glass company Lasvit from North Bohemian Nový Bor is famous for its unique glass sculptures and its light fittings that it exports to the whole world. It combines traditional Czech glass art with modern technology and design. The company collaborates with leading international and Czech designers. Lasvit projects can be found in European cities such as London, Paris and Prague, as well as in Moscow, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Singapore and even Dubai. The lamps from Lasvit are now also available in the most famous department store, Harrods of London.
