An exhibition with the alternative title Dürer’s depiction of the Virgin Mary in dialogue with contemporary art began on 18 February in the Montanelli Museum in Prague.
The core of the exhibition, which will be held until 22 May, is comprised by the graphic sheets of Albrecht Dürer on loan from the Cultural History Museum in Osnabrück. The Montanelli Museum, which focuses on presentation of modern art, is presenting this in contract with three installations and video projections by the American artist, Teresa Diehl who was born in Lebanon
The main theme of the exhibition is comparison of the concept of Mary – women 500 years ago and today. The largest part of the exhibition is taken up by Dürer’s cycle of woodcuts entitled The Life of the Virgin, which was first issued in book form in 1511. The exhibition is dominated by the copper engraving of the Mother of God as the Queen of Heaven – a symbol of God’s infinite grace.
