Town
The town is situated in the hollow between Krušné hory and České středohoří. It belongs to the oldest as well as the most modern spas in Europe. Healing springs in the Teplice valley were probably known already 2 000 years ago, which is proved by the archaeological finds of Roman coins in Pravřídlo and the finds of Celtic coins and jewels from the beginning of our epoch in Obří Pramen near Duchcov. The old habit, known already in the Classical Greece and Rome, to show one’s gratitude to healing power of mineral springs by throwing coins or other gifts into the spring, brought the confirmation of the fact that these springs are one of the oldest and most intensively used ones in Europe. The historic records from the early Middle Ages mention settlements of Slavic inhabitants and foundation of the Benedictine monastery of St. John the Baptist by Queen Judith. The spa buildings are set in the middle of the town in beautiful green of the parks and orchards.
