In recent years in particular, there has been a boom in open-air festivals, dozens of which are held in the summer across the Czech Republic. Outdoor podiums play host to hundreds of Czech and international musicians in all genres.

The most popular open-air festivals

Rock festivals

  • Rock for People (www.rockforpeople.cz) in Český Brod just outside of Prague, held in early July, strong focus on rock.
  • Trutnov Open Air Music Festival (www.festivaltrutnov.cz) – a festival in the foothills of the Giant Mountains oriented still more towards hard rock.
  • Benátská noc (www.benatskanoc.cz) – a festival in Malá Skála in the Bohemian Paradise, especially devoted to the Czech pop scene.

Multicultural festivals

  • Colours of Ostrava (www.colours.cz) – the largest Czech festival focusing on world music – held in mid-July.
  • Sázava fest (www.sazavafest.cz) – a multicultural event held not far from Prague.
  • United Islands of Prague (www.unitedislands.cz) – a festival of all musical genres, held on Prague’s islands in June.
  • Khamoro (www.khamoro.cz) - the best of international Romany culture in Prague.
  • Respect (www.respectmusic.cz) – international festival of ethnic and world music on the Prague island of Štvanice.

Dance music festivals

  • Love Planet (www.loveplanet.cz) – the very latest innovations of the Czech and international scene (dance and hip hop stage).
  • Summer of Love (www.summeroflove.cz) – festival for the dance and techno scenes held on the horse track in Pardubice.

Folk and folklore festivals

  • Holidays in Telč (Prázdniny v Telči) (www.prazdninyvtelci.cz) – a festival of folk music held in the unique setting of the historic town of Telč, now a UNESCO heritage site.
  • International folklore festival in Strážnice (www.nulk.cz) – one of the oldest and largest folklore festivals in Europe, and a unique opportunity to hear the earliest traditional Czech and Moravian music.
