Romance of Southern Bohemia at Château Oltyně

Premiere type: Monuments and history, Recreational sports. We recommend for: Relaxing holiday, Active holidays.
Announced: August 2008

Château Oltyně began not only as a relaxation, cultural and educational centre with accommodation in the Château’s apartments, but also as a centre for cultural and social events. Regular exhibitions of paintings, photographs and sculptures of various artists are arranged in the Château’s new art gallery. The gallery will simultaneously serve as a year-round ceremonial hall.

The surrounding countryside contains extensive tracts of interesting forest, extending from Oltyně all the way to the River Lužnice. A number of noteworthy historical monuments are to be found in the surroundings. The neo-Renaissance Château Oltyně is located 12 km west of Tábor.

History of the Château
The first reference to the village of Oltyně dates back to 1378. In 1551, Jindřich Hozlauer of Hozlau bought the village, and, in 1560, his son Kryštof ordered the building of a fortress on the site. The last reference to the fortress is from the year 1790. In 1859, it became an independent estate owned by Count Josef Fellner of Feldegg, the builder of the present neo-Renaissance château situated in the middle of an English park. Château Oltyně is the home of several examples of an elegant horse breed originating from Holland, the so-called Friesian horse.
