Pilsen Prazdroj – a new exhibition of brewing Pilsner Urquell beer

The birthplace of Pilsner Urquell in Pilsen introduces a new attraction for visitors. Pilsen Prazdroj has opened a new exhibition that shows the manufacturing process and raw materials used to brew Pilsner Urquell beer. The exhibition extends the current visitor’s tour of the brewery and takes place in the premises of the historic brewhouse, renovated to its original appearance in the first half of the 20th century. The entire exhibition is prepared in such a way that visitors can comprehend the “mystery” of Pilsner Urquell production with their own senses.

The first rarity of the new exhibition is the largest personal lift in the Czech Republic, with a capacity of 72 persons. It elevates visitors to a panoramic projection point with a revolving auditorium. The audience can watch parallel views from the production area of the brewery that interchange with the individual phases of the brewing and manufacturing procedure of the premium lager Pilsner Urquell. The projection, as well as the tour of the brewery, prove that though the times and technologies are changing, the manufacturing procedure of Pilsner Urquell has remained unchanged since 1842.

The exhibition is not built on visual effects alone, but it also involves listening, touching, smelling and tasting. Visitors get a thorough introduction to the basic ingredients of beer brewing, including the special yeasts that are traditionally used for producing Pilsner Urquell and which give this premium lager its characteristic taste. The yeasts, therefore, are stored in a special cooled safety box for the exhibition. In addition to the Pilsner brewery, this special strain of yeasts is stored in banks in Prague and London.

The final part of the exhibition is a renovated brewhouse from the 1930s. Visitors can also see the current modern brewhouse, as well as the oldest brewing vat, dating from 1842.

Individuals can visit the exhibition daily at 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., without prior reservation.
