The Seidel Photographic Studio Museum
Premiere type: Monuments and history. We recommend for: Relaxing holiday.
Announced: May 2008
This museum provides an opportunity to tour the house where the photographer Josef Seidel, and later his son František, both lived and worked. They captured on film, among other things, a part of the Šumava borderland that has already disappeared.
In this house, which was used from 1905 until 1949 as both a family house and a photographic studio, nearly 140,000 glass plates and celluloid negatives were preserved that provide a true pictorial chronicle of Šumava and of the ordinary life of people in the borderland in the first half of the last century. In addition, the original furniture and equipment of the house, and especially that of the photographic studio, were also well preserved, with many period instruments, props and decorations, as well as much detailed documentation such as the names and addresses of the people portrayed, receipts, lists, etc.
Josef Seidel (of German nationality) was born on 2 October 1859 in the village of Hasel (Děčín area) into the family of a glasscutter. After finishing his training as a photographer’s apprentice he travelled throughout Transylvania, Hungary, Bohemia and Austria as a photographic assistant. For two years, he also worked in Vienna with a company that produced photographic plates. In 1887, Josef Seidel was in Prachatice and he probably made his first landscape photographs of Šumava at that time. In 1888, he became the head of Gotthard Zimmer’s photographic studio in Český Krumlov, which, after Gotthard Zimmer died (1847–1886), was led by his wife Karolina. Two years later, Josef Seidel took over the studio in the garden of house no. 64 at Linecká Street.
