The town was founded in the early 16th century above the valley of the river Metuje. It is unique by its picturesqueness and unity of architectural styles. From the original fortifications preserved the Tower Zázvorka. The town centre was adapted in the style of Venetian Renaissance with characteristic gables, called the “swallow-tails”, which recently decorate just the northwestern part of the square. Over the river, on the place of the former castle was built a valuable renaissance chateau, the interiors of which were adjusted by Dušan Jurkovič in the styles of popularised Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The Chateau Tower Máselnice dominates the silhouette of the town.
