Chomutov has been known for whole decades as the centre of the heavy industry, power engineering, metallurgy and brown-coal mining. The visitors who want to get acquainted in detail with surface coal mining may go for an excursion in the surroundings of Chomutov. The seeing of approximately three hours of the mine with the area of roughly 44 km2 begins with the overall view of the mining pit. By terrain vehicles the drive to the large machines follows where it is possible to see the whole mining equipment from near. Interesting is, especially, the continuous struggle with water, transportation of coal and earth along belt transporters and the view of the remains of old mining galleries of the former deep mines; some of them are 150 years old. The seeing is ended in recultivated landscape where after the end of mining suitable wood species were planted and to which the original animals return slowly. The town of Chomutov may boast of valuable historic core, it is also an ideal starting point for trips to the Krušné hory (Mountains). Enjoying major interest is the extensive Podkrušnohorský zoopark or the not far water reservoir of Nechranice.
The lake at the border of Chomutov is the single alum lake in the world. Thanks to alum the water does not contain any live organisms and prevents the growth of water weeds and blue-green algae, therefore, during the whole summer season safe bathing is guaranteed there. Moreover, the composition of the water is beneficial for human health. The recreational area around the lake offers all that is necessary for pleasant spending of week-end or holiday days – well-arranged beaches and piers with cloakrooms, boats lending offices, children‘s playgrounds, restaurant, refreshment and summer cinema. Rich opportunities are offered by the 780 m long, water-skiing tow, minigolf, table tennis, skittle with four alleys or grounds for volleyball and foot-netball. Close to the lake is the Podkrušnohorský Zoopark, leading around the recreational area is the 3.2 km long well-arranged cycling path.
