One of the best-known pilgrimage places of the Czech Republic is connected with the names of St. Cyril and Method. A part of the area, apart from the 100 m long five-aisled basilica, are the underground catacombs and lapidary with the foundations of the former Romanesque sanctuary. Pope John Paul IInd granted to the basilica of Velehrad in 1985 the Golden Rose, a valuable gift boasting of which are only the French Lourdes, Mexican Guadalupe and Polish Czenstochowa.
