Picture Thanks to the varied nature with afforested mountain ranges and numerous castles and chateaus the Bohemian North is a place searched for for pleasantly spent holiday. The metropolis is the town Liberec above which the Ještěd mountain towers with the modern TV transmitter and sports area with ski-jumps. A popular recreational area is also the surroundings of the Máchovo jezero (Mácha Lake), the devotees of adrenalin sports are attracted by numerous rock terrains. The Bohemian North offers the densest network of look-out towers of all the regions of the Czech Republic. Extraordinarily popular are the castles and chateaus Bezděz, Frýdlant, Lemberk, Sloup and Zákupy or the ruin of the castle Ralsko. Seen can be both the buildings of preserved folk architecture, and impressive church monuments – e.g., the basilica of St. Vavřinec (Lawrence) and St. Zdislava in Jablonné v Podještědí or the pilgrimage area in Hejnice.
